Five judge bench to hear writ petition against death penalty

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The petition was filed by journalist Malinda Seniviratne challenging the decision to implement the death penalty.

Accordingly the Court of Appeal today appointed a five judge bench to hear the case.

Seneviratne said implementing the death penalty could lead to the violation of human rights.

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that four convicts on death row will be executed soon.

He said that he has signed the papers to execute the four convicts who have been sentenced to death on drug related offences.
