Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister to sue two private TV channels and Buddhist monk for false allegations

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has announced that he will be taking legal action against two privately owned television channels and a well-known Buddhist monk for making unsubstantiated allegations against him.

The Minister said in a tweet that he instructed his counsel to seek damages from privately-owned Ada Derana Hiru News for Rs.1 billion each for maliciously giving wide coverage to “wild and unsubstantiated allegations” made against him by Thiniyawala Palitha Thera.

“See you in Court, Dilith, Raynor and Palitha,” Minister Samaraweera said referring to the Palitha Thera as a “Millionaire Businessman/monk”

Palitha Thero serves on the Board of Directors at Lanka Hospitals as a non-executive director while Dilith Jayaweera is the Chairman of TV Derana and Rayynor Silva owns the Hiru TV.

The Minister said in a tweet that he seeks Rs. 1 billion each from the three parties for levelling what he called �wild and unsubstantiated allegations� against him.
