Two suspects arrested over Hanwella shooting

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Two suspects have been arrested this morning in connection with the fatal shooting at Embulgama Junction in Hanwella Sunday night. A van and a motorcycle used by the suspects have also been recovered, the police said.

According to the police, a group arrived in a van have shot at two people in a car at the Embulgama Junction in Hanwella on the Avissawella-Colombo main road at around 9:15 last night.

One of the passengers of the car had died after succumbing to injuries and the other passenger had been admitted to the Homagama Base Hospital. A man who was in a shop nearby has also been injured in the shooting and admitted to the Avissawella Base Hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Belihullage Gedara Suresh Ruwantha Gunasinghe alias Chuti Malli, a 23-year-old resident of Ranala, Jalthara and a known underworld gang member.

The injured passenger has been identified as Indunil Vajira Kumara aged 26, a resident of Jalthara Ranala. He has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.

Police say the shooting was the result of a clash between two organized criminal gangs.

Hanwella and Nawagamuwa police stations are conducting further investigations.
