(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –New Democratic front (NDF) Presidential candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa has promised that he will provide free noon meals and two sets of school uniforms to all public schoolchildren if he is elected to power.
Addressing a NDF election rally held at Deraniyalaga yesterday he recalled that when his father, the late President Ranasingha Premadasa had observed some schoolchildren attending school in torn uniforms he had acted to provide school uniforms and mid-day meals to schoolchildren numbering 4.3 million. It was the UNP’s political rivals who later abandoned the provision of meals to schoolchildren, he pointed out.
Premadasa said that when he becomes President on November 16, he will provide two sets of school uniforms and mid-day meals to all public schoolchildren. This will enable all children to pursue their studies on an equal footing.
Premadasa said he would eradicate the narcotic drugs menace which has engulfed the country. He said drug racketeers strengthened their ranks by entering the political field.
Once he becomes President he would assign the Defence and Law and Order Ministries to Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to safeguard the country’s security by eliminating terrorist elements and the narcotic drugs racket.
