NPP Presidential Candidate to create a social system in which women are treated with dignity and respect

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Presidential candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake says a social system will be created for women to get the respect and recognition they deserve.

He said the women have become a major victim of economic pressure and social crime and the two major concerns have led to issues women are faced with. One reason is the various crises in the country and the other is the unique concerns women alone face.

The NPP presidential candidate expressed these views at the NPP’s women conference organized by the Progressive Women’s Collective of the NPP held under the theme “Building Women’s Power Towards Hope” Sunday (20), at the Public Library in Colombo.

“Woman has become a major victim of economic pressure and social crime. The truth is that within the last 10 to 15 years, no ruler, no administration has focused on the treatment of women or paid any regard for her standard of living or the social dignity that should be given to her.”

Noting the lack of female representation in governing, the Presidential candidate said women have not been included in the decision making process, despite over 51% of the country being female. He further noted that female representation is severely limited in several sectors in the country.

He said the country is labelled as a state that ships women as housemaids, especially to Middle Eastern countries and under a government of his, they will definitely stop sending unskilled Sri Lankan women to the Middle East for employment.

Parliamentarian Nalinda Jayathissa and representatives of many women’s organizations participated in the event.
