(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Road Development Authority today announced that two more sections of the Southern Expressway and a section of the Outer Circular Highway will be opened from 12 midnight on November 8th, 2019 for vehicle traffic.
Accordingly, on Southern Expressway 21.8 kilometer section from Barawakumbuka to Mattala via Andarawewa and the 16.6 kilometer section from Andarawewa to Hambantota will be open for public travel.
On the Outer Circular Highway 9.6 kilometer Kadawatha – Kerawalapitiya section will be opened from Midnight Friday.
With the opening of the Kadawatha – Kerawalapitiya section, the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway (E03) and the Southern Expressway (E01) will connect at the Kerawalapitiya interchange of the Outer Circular Highway (E02).
With the opening of the two sections on Southern Expressway, motorists coming from Matara can enter the expressway from Barawakumbuka and travel to Sooriyaweva, Hambantota, Mattala and Kataragama within a short period of time.
Motorists can enter and exit the Expressway from the Barawakumbuka area on the Embilipitiya – Nonagama road completed in the 3rd phase.
The Phase 3 of the E01 expressway has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 31.57 billion and for the Phase 4 estimated cost is Rs 52 billion.
It is significant that all the constructions have been completed in an eco-friendly manner. The two sections of the Southern Expressway will be opened this morning under the patronage of representatives of the Road Development Authority and the construction companies.
The RDA announced that the expressway tolls will be revised with the opening of the new sections. The electronic payment system at the Kerawalapitiya interchange will not be operational until further notice.
