(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The United National Party (UNP) parliamentary group will hold a decisive meeting today to decide on its leadership. The meeting is scheduled to be held at 3 pm today under the patronage of party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at party headquarters Sirikotha.
General Secretary of the UNP, Parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said concerns regarding the party leadership and other issues will be discussed.
Various suggestions regarding the UNP leadership have been presented. Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed a leadership council. However, it is reported that a majority of parliamentarians, who wants Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to lead the party, opposes the idea.
UNP MP Nalin Bandara told the media that the group supporting Sajith Premadasa will be compelled to take drastic measures if the parliamentary group failed to hand over leadership to Premadasa.
Meanwhile, MP Vajira Abeywardena said according to the party constitution, Ranil Wickremesinghe cannot be removed by the parliamentary group since he was selected as the leader at a general convention of the party.
