Over 8000 military deserters report back during the general amnesty

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Over 8000 deserters have reported to their respective bases during the week-long general amnesty period declared on 5th February by the Ministry of Defense.

On the instructions of the President, to coincide with the 72nd Independence Day, a week-long general amnesty period was declared from February 5 – 12 for tri-forces absentees to receive a discharge or to rejoin and continue their national service to the country.

According to the Military Spokesman, Brigadier Chandana Wickremasinghe, 7 officers and 6,091 other rankers of the Army, 773 personnel of Navy and 6 officers and 1141 other rankers of Air Force have reported back to the bases by the 12th.

Brigadier Chandana Wickremasinghe said it was a delight that a significant number had reported back to the service.
