(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Government has decided to commence construction of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plant in Kerawalapitiya this year, Passenger Transport and Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
The Kerewalapitiya LNG Power Plant will add 300 MW of power to the national grid.
The Minister disclosed this participating at a function held at Raluwa in Medamulaka, Hambantota yesterday.
He said by constructing the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant, the Ceylon Electricity Board will be able to provide uninterrupted supply of electricity to the people without any power cuts.
“Not only that, we will be able to save the losses incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board by stopping the current emergency purchase of electricity at high prices. Also we can help people reduce their electricity bills by providing electricity for a lower price,” the Minister added.
