(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The first Executive Committee meeting of the Sri Lanka Podujana Nidahas Sandanaya (SLPPS) was held at Temple Trees yesterday under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Five more parties joined the new alliance (SLPPS) yesterday making the number of the parties in the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sandanaya to 14.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stressed that he will not allow the new alliance to face a similar crisis that befalls the UNP at present.
Representatives of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna,
Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, Samasamaja Party, Communist Party, Mahajana Party, Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, Democratic Left Front, Deshavimukthi Janatha Pakshaya participated in this meeting.
Former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said nine recognized political parties were in the alliance and all other parties which joined the Sri Lanka Podujana peramuna at the last election will also be integrated into this new alliance after the completion of registration process.
Rajapaksa said that he will be committed in making this new alliance a stable and formidable political force in the country.
The Executive Committee approved the proposal for the inclusion of five more political parties to the alliance yesterday.
Accordingly,the Eelam People’s Democratic Party, Ceylon Workers Congress, National Congress, Damila Mahajana Vimukthi Sanvidanaya, Eksath Mahajana Pakshaya have joined this alliance.
The Executive Committee also approved the appointment of Minister Dinesh Gunawardene as a Vice Chairman, Minister Wimal Weerawansa as National Organizer, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Prof Tissa Vitharana and DEW Gunasekara as Deputy chairmen, Asanga Nawaratne and D.Kalansuriya as Deputy Secretaries at the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said the alliance will help achieve 2 majority at the upcoming General Election.
We don’t want to allow the problems prevailing in the UNP into our new alliance and we will not allow such things to happen in our alliance
“Our main objective is to carry forward the policies of the President. The President’s hands need to be strengthened by securing power in Parliament”, he said.
