A new police unit to probe and confiscate illegal assets acquired by criminals

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Western Province Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon says that a new police unit will be set up under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in the next few days to probe illegal assets of those involved in criminal activities.

Addressing a media briefing at the Police Headquarters yesterday, DIG Tennakoon said the new division called the “Illegal Assets Investigation Division” will be established under the directives of the President and Prime Minister.

He further stated that it is the duty of this division to work full time under the Money Laundering Act to probe and confiscate the movable and immovable property acquired illegally through criminal activities and narcotics trade.

DIG Tennakoon said the police have identified the underworld criminals and their criminal networks and there are around 25 criminal gangs operating in the Western Province and around 20 of them are actively engaged in criminal activities.

He said although some of these criminals are already in the prison, they are directing criminal activities through their networks and strict action will be taken against anyone even slightly involved with these criminals and their criminal activities.
