Six types of non-degradable plastics will be banned from next year

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says that steps have been taken to ban six types of non-degradable plastics.

He stated that steps have been taken to send the information to the Attorney General for approval to print the gazette notification regarding the ban on these plastics.

According to the Minister, six types, including sachet packets used for shampoo, gel etc., plastic bottles containing pesticides, straws and toys, have been approved for ban. The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has taken steps to ban these items as they cause serious harm to the environment.

The Minister said the relevant work can be completed within the next week.

“We are doing this step by step. Next is many other types including polythene bags. We will definitely take action to stop all this,” he said.
