(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Attorney General Dappula de Livera has informed the Secretary to the President that the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement proposed to be signed by the previous government of good governance is not legal.
Accordingly, the Attorney General has stated that the documents exchanged in connection with the agreement are unconstitutional, said the Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne.
However, the US had decided last December to suspend the US $ 480 million grant to Sri Lanka under the agreement.
The agreement was a controversial subject that has been widely debated during the Presidential and Parliamentary elections as well and the current government has stated that this is an agreement that is unfavorable to the country and will not be signed without a review.
The President also appointed a committee to look into the matter and the committee has decided that the program will have significant adverse impacts on the national, social and economic well-being of Sri Lanka.
