(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The travel ban around the island has been extended till 7th June, the Government announced today(24).
Minister Johnston Fernando said that the ban has been extended to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
He said that when the ban is temporarily lifted tomorrow (Tuesday) only one person can leave home to purchase essential items.
The ban will also be relaxed on 31st May and 4th June for the public to purchase essential items.
The Minister also said that vehicle movements will continue to be restricted tomorrow.
He said that the public will be permitted to travel to their nearest store to purchase essential items.
Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said that the travel ban will be relaxed at 4am tomorrow (Tuesday) and reimposed at 11pm.
He said the ban will be relaxed again at 4am on 31st May and reimposed at 11pm and relaxed again at 4am on 4th June and reimposed at 11pm and will be in force till 7th June.
General Shavendra Silva said that only essential services will be permitted to travel when the travel ban is relaxed and for one person to leave home to purchase essential items.
The Army Commander also insisted that only shops selling essential items will be permitted to open as well as certain banks.
He said that delivery services will be permitted to operate during the travel ban.
The travel ban has been extended on a recommendation made by medical experts and others.
