Loy Kratong Festival Launches amid Celebrations: Rivers and lagoons full of hand-crafted lotuses

(LANKAPUVATH | THAILAND) – Buriram Province – with the cooperation of Buriram Provincial Cultural Office, Prakhon Chai District, and Chorakhe Mak Sub-district – has arranged a grand Loy Kratong Festival in Prasat Muang Tam Archaeological Site’s area from November 18th – 19th, 2021, the festival represent the common culture of the NE, part of Thailand, and called “Baray Satta Somna Sai Nam Prasat Muang Tam Nomnam Pucha.”

The main event of the festival was to release Kratong to float around the 1000-year-old Baray or ancient lagoon and included rituals expressing apology towards the goddess of water from all 4 directions, as well as performances of lights and sound, the old bazaar, Muang Tam street food, local art shows, Thai country song shows.

Loy Kratong Festival is an important annual event celebrated in many countries of South-East Asia, and arranged on the full moon of 12th month – according to lunar calendar.

It’s an ancient tradition Thai inherited from Indian ever since Sukhothai era.

The tradition itself will vary in each region of Thailand. In North-Eastern, there’ll be ‘Somna Nam Keun Peng’ to express apology towards the goddess of water.
