(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Agriculture says that the National Agriculture Policy formulated for the first time in the history of the country will be implemented expeditiously by all institutions relevant to the field of agriculture.
Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (09) the Minister said that this would usher in a new awakening in the field of agriculture.
Through the national policy a number of programs will be launched with the aim of increasing the contribution of the agro food system to the national economy.
The Minister said that the aim of this policy is to move from a subsistence economy to a productive economy free from imports.
The National Agriculture Policy slightly moving away from traditional agriculture will incorporate modern technology, export markets and a national program to revitalize the farmer’s economy.
The Minister also explained the program being carried out with the aim of cultivating everything that can be cultivated locally in the country.
Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage expressed the hope that a national agricultural war would be launched next year and that it would bring about a revolutionary change in agriculture.
