(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – At least 22 students were injured and hospitalized after the bus transporting the students of the Katuwana National School in Hambantota met with an accident near the Hingurawatte Bridge in Hadugala, Walasmulla Police said.
The bus carrying the students of Katuwana National School had met with an accident while returning from a trip to Deiyandara Niyadagala.
Close to 30 students, two teachers and six parents were traveling in the bus when it had crashed into a tree, the police said.
Two students who were seriously injured in the accident have been admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital, one to the Matara General Hospital, and 23 others with minor injuries have been admitted to the Walasmulla Base Hospital and the Kirama Regional Hospital, police said.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the bus driver had managed to prevent a major accident by swerving the bus, which had developed a mechanical fault, towards the hill side of the road to prevent it from falling into a precipice 100 feet below, the Police said.
The police are conducting further investigations.
