(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The United States will take steps to provide credit facilities for renewable energy projects through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung has assured.
The U.S. Ambassador was speaking at a meeting with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Monday (28) at the Presidential Secretariat. The Ambassador commended the Government’s assistance during the recent visit of US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland to Sri Lanka.
Explaining the reasons for the recent collapse of the Sri Lankan economy, the President said that he was looking forward to the support of the United States in reaching out to the International Monetary Fund.
Ms. Chung praised the government’s decision to go to the International Monetary Fund and said it was important for Sri Lanka in the long run.
The President stated that steps will be taken to provide relief to low income earners, regardless of any economic reforms.
In a Twitter message after the meeting with the President, the U.S. Ambassador said the recent United States-Sri Lanka Partnership Dialogue underlined U.S. commitment to a democratic, prosperous, and sovereign Sri Lanka.
Ambassador Chung said she met with President Rajapaksa to discuss Sri Lanka’s economic challenges and how the two countries can work together to promote inclusive governance and protect human rights.
