(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the police will conduct a special inspection and instruction program on bicycles traveling on the road within the next two weeks.
The Deputy Inspector General of Traffic and Road Safety has stated that due to the fuel crisis prevailing in the country these days, the public is increasingly turning to the use of bicycles.
He has also issued a series of special instructions to DIGs, Divisional Officers, HQIs and Government Agents in this regard.
There have been 1,202 fatal road accidents so far in this year and 96 of the deaths were of cyclists, the Police said.
The main causes of accidents are the lack of headlights on bicycles, failure to turn on headlights, lack of rear reflector lights, disobedience to road signs and crossing the road.
The Police Media Spokesman requested motorists and motorcyclists to drive their vehicles with special care for cyclists in the future. He further stated for cyclists to wear reflective clothing and protective gear when cycling, especially at night.
