(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that the essential commodities including fuel, gas, medicines are scheduled to be delivered and the situation will be resolved within a few days, President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
The government’s aim was to overcome the economic challenges the country is facing and build a strong economy with new investments by giving priority to the export and agricultural economy. But the Covid epidemic situation faced by the whole world has led all countries to a severe economic crisis. Very rich countries are looking for solutions to the current economic crisis. That situation affects the economy of a country like ours where there is no cash reserve.
The President discussed with all political party leaders to find solutions to the political crisis that arose in this backdrop within an all-party government, PMD statement said. But with the failure of the response, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe was invited to take over the position of Prime Minister.
Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund have been very successful and the necessary background has been set to implement the loan assistance program within the next few weeks.
In the last few weeks, discussions were held with state leaders by telephone as well as with the ambassadors of many countries to obtain the support of those countries. After a long and well-planned effort, the country is now getting its results.
• Supplies of essential medicines have already been received.
• 65,000 metric tons of fertilizers have been ordered under Indian credit facility. The first ship carrying 44,000 metric tons of fertilizer will reach the island tomorrow (09).
• Fuel, gas and ordered essential items will continue to be received from 12th July.
• Under various agricultural programs, all arrangements have been made to prevent food shortage in the country.
• The 21st Amendment has already been approved by the Cabinet.
At a time when successful solutions have been achieved to the existing problematic situation, the program of the opposition political groups to mislead the people is very sad. This will set the country back again.
It is the responsibility and duty of the people to support the building of a good country for the future generations of the country through a correct economic program. Therefore, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requested the people to properly understand the current situation and act peacefully and intelligently without getting caught up in wrong ideologies.
