Sri Lanka President’s resignation officially announced

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –The Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced a little while ago that he had received the resignation letter of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena making a special statement to the media at the Speaker’s official residence announced that he has received the resignation letter sent by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in accordance with the Article 38 (1) of the Constitution.

Accordingly, the Speaker announced that the President has legally resigned from his office effective July 14, 2022.

The constitutional process to select a new president will be implemented from now, the Speaker said. The Prime Minister will exercise, perform and discharge the powers, duties and functions of the office of President until the constitutional process is concluded.
