(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Defense has decided to lift the ban on six international Tamil organizations that were designated in the past as proscribed organizations in Sri Lanka for supporting the terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and time to time funding for terrorism.
In an Extraordinary Gazette Notification the Ministry of Defense said that the ban on six organizations designated under the UN Security Council resolution 1373 was lifted.
Accordingly, the ban on the Australian Tamil Congress, the Global Tamil Forum, the World Dravida Coordination Committee, the Dravida Eelam People’s Congress, the Canadian Tamil Congress and the British Tamil Forum has been lifted.
The Ministry said the amendment to the list of designated persons was made under Regulation 4(7) of the United Nations Regulations No.1 of 2012.
The Ministry of Defense stated that the ban was lifted with effect from 12 August as per the recommendations made in the studies conducted regarding the activities of these organizations in the past.
