Korean government to compensate family of Sri Lankan who died at Halloween crush

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Government of South Korea has decided to provide financial assistance to the family of the Sri Lankan who died in a stampede at a Halloween event in Seoul.

The Government of South Korea has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the late Mohammad Jinath (27) of Udathalawinna, Kandy who died in the stampede in Itaewon, Seoul on 29th Of October 2022.

The Prime Minister’s Media Unit said the Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka Santhush Woonjin Jeong called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday (Nov 03) to convey the condolences on behalf of the South Korean government.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena also conveyed his sympathies on behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka for the losses of 156 lives including 26 foreigners and for those who injured in the stampede during Halloween celebrations.

The Ambassador further stated that the Government of Korea has decided to provide financial assistance for the family of the deceased and for his funeral purposes.

Sri Lanka is taking necessary measures to repatriate the body of the deceased.

The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau said it had received information that the deceased had gone to South Korea for education. However, the Foreign Employment Bureau further stated that he was staying in South Korea on a refugee visa.

At least 154 people have died in Seoul on last Saturday night as huge Halloween crowds surged into a narrow street in in the Itaewon nightlife area of the South Korean capital.
