Sri Lanka Parliament passes Budget 2023

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The 2023 Budget presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as Minister of Finance was passed with amendments by the House today, with a majority of 43 votes.

When the division was taken after the Committee Stage Debate on the 20th Allotted Day, the Appropriation Bill (2023) received 123 votes in favor and 80 votes against the Bill.

Two MPs abstained from voting.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella called for a division after Parliament approved the expenditure heads of the Ministries of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies and Investment Promotion today.

The Second Reading of the Appropriation Bill (2023) was passed by the House on 22 November 2022 with a majority of 37 votes. 121 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Budget while 84 MPs voted against it.

The debate on the third reading of the 2023 Budget or the committee stage debate got underway on the 23rd of November.
