(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said the English letters that denote provinces on number plates will not be printed on the vehicle number plate of the vehicles that are registered after the 1st of January 2023.
Speaking to media this morning, the Commissioner General said new registrations and when amending the existing vehicle number plates, the owners will be required to make an additional payment.
Meanwhile, the Motor Traffic Department has decided to change the vehicle registration application form.
Commissioner General Weerasinghe said the complex registration form of 12 sheets of paper which was used till now for vehicle registration has been reduced to 6 sheets of paper and the new registration form will be used from January 1.
Mr. Weerasinghe further mentioned that this change was made by taking into account the complaints received about the complexity of the document file so that it can be used easily by the people and also focusing on the paper related problem the country is facing.
Meanwhile the system of demerit points for vehicle driving licenses will be started before March 31 next year (2023), the Commissioner General said.
Accordingly, when a driver accumulates 24 demerit points, his driver’s license will be canceled immediately.
Mr. Weerasinghe said that after such cancellation, the concerned driver cannot apply for the license for a period of one year, and after one year, an application should be submitted to get a new driver’s license.
