Sri Lanka court releases 12 Indian fishermen under strict conditions

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Twelve Indian nationals who were arrested by Sri Lankan authorities for illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters have been released on strict conditions.

The Indian fishermen, who were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy while fishing in the Jaffna waters, were produced before the Point Pedro Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The Point Pedro Magistrate took steps to suspend the 03-year prison sentence imposed on them to 10 years due to the fact that the Indian prisoners pleaded guilty and sought pardon.

The Indian fishermen were released after strongly warning them not to enter the northern seas of Sri Lanka by any means.

The fishermen, who were released on strict conditions, are to be handed over to the Indian Coast Guard by officials of the Immigration and Emigration Department with the assistance of the Navy.
