Foreign Minister Ali Sabry meets the U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs at a luncheon meeting with U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland on 01 February 2023, discussed issues of importance to the two countries in further consolidating Sri Lanka–U.S. bilateral relations.

Under Secretary Nuland carried a special message from U.S. President Joseph Biden to President Ranil Wickremesinghe felicitating Sri Lanka on the 75th anniversary of its independence, which also marks the 75th year of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

While appreciating the support extended by the U.S. towards Sri Lanka in its discussions with the IMF, Foreign Minister Sabry welcomed the significant assistance provided by the U.S. to particularly address the economic challenges of the country. He also elaborated on the measures taken by the Government to improve governance, combat corruption, and foster reconciliation.

While noting that it was a critical year for the country, Under Secretary Nuland conveyed U.S. support and cooperation to the Government’s efforts to overcome the present challenges and bring about socio-economic development and reconciliation.

Under-Secretary Nuland was accompanied by the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, Deputy Assistant Secretary for India in the Bureau of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nancy Izzo Jackson, Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary Mary Frangakis and the U.S. Embassy Political Officer Kevin Price. Along with Foreign Minister Sabry, the Sri Lanka side was represented by Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aruni Wijewardane, Secretary to the Treasury Mahinda Siriwardana and Director General of the West Division of the Foreign Ministry Shobini Gunasekera.

Under Secretary Nuland also paid a courtesy call on President Ranil Wickremesinghe during her short visit to Sri Lanka.
