(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A former cricket captain of St. Thomas’ College, Matale Dushmantha Sithul Wijesekera, who was a promising young spinner, was killed in a fatal car accident at Palapathwala, Matale on early Saturday.
The 19-year-old cricketer, who sat for the GCE Advanced Level Examination in January, met with the accident while returning home from a batch party on Friday night with his friends in a jeep.
The driver was unable to control the jeep and it has crashed into a tree near Palapathwala road in Matale. Dushmantha was killed on the spot and the classmate who had driven the car was admitted to the ICU of the Kandy General Hospital. His injured friends have been hospitalized.
Dushmantha, who was also a senior student leader of St. Thomas College in the year 2021/2022, is one of the greatest cricketers born from that school in recent times. He excelled in cricket since childhood and joined the provincial under-19 squad.
Dushmantha’s remains are lying at his residence in Thotagamuwa Estate, Matale, and the funeral will take place today (10).
