Police allowed to detain main suspect in the Kalutara student’s death for 48 hours and question

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan Court today granted permission to the police to detain the main suspect arrested in connection with the suspicious death of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Kalutara.

Kalutara Chief Magistrate Mrs. Nita Hemamalee Halpandeniya granted permission to detain the 29-year-old suspect for 48 hours for interrogations when the suspect was produced in the court today.

Dhanushka Gayan Sabandu, a resident of Kalutara South, Isuru Garden, was arrested yesterday in Hikkaduwa based on information received by the Kalutara Police.

It was reported before the court that the main suspect in connection with the death of Tihara Nirmani, a resident of Kalutara, Nagoda, whose nude body was found on the railway track behind the Sicilian Walk Hotel located at No. 402, Main Street, Kalutara South, was arrested by Police Inspector Dhammka De Silva.

The police reported to the court that the suspect was drinking alcohol together with the girl who died that day in room number 7 of the hotel.

Accordingly, since the investigations have not been completed so far, the police asked the court for permission to detain and interrogate the suspect for the next 48 hours, stating that 24 hours is not enough for future investigations.
