(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A discussion led by the State Minister of Finance ShehanSemasinghe and the State Minister of Social Empowerment Anupa Pasquale, was held today at the Ministry of Finance on the regulation of the Samurdhi Bank system. The State Minister of Finance ShehanSemasinghe stated that community empowerment is the primary objective and responsibility of the Samurdhi Development Department.
The State Minister pointed out how various problems had arisen due to the lack of proper regulation regarding the Samurdhi Bank system.
The State Minister emphasized that, as per the instructions of the President, the government has set the platform to achieve the objective of empowering the community and that the Samurdhi Bank system should be properly regulated.
The State Minister also pointed out that this method will not affect job security of the employees or negatively impact on the Samurdhibank system.
Emphasizing that the Samurdhi Development Department should work full-time to empower the community, the State Minister also mentioned that more attention will be paid on the empowering of the community when reviewing the performance of the Department.
Also, the Central Bank Governor Dr. NandalalWeerasingheexplained the steps to be taken to regulate the Samurdhi banking system, and he further mentioned that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka would provide the necessary support for that.
Accordingly, a joint committee was appointed by the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the State Ministry of Social Empowerment to prepare the regulatory systems.
