CID ordered to produce Schaffter’s phone in court

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Colombo Additional Magistrate Mrs. Rajindra Jayasuriya ordered the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday (15) to submit the mobile phone and SIM card used by late Janashakthi Group director Dinesh Schaffter to the court within a week.

At present, the mobile phone and SIM card have been sent to the Government Analyst Department for investigations and the magistrate ordered the CID to submit the evidence immediately through a motion or to the court if the investigations are finished.

On the previous day of the trial, the Criminal Investigation Department expressed its opposition to a request made by Schaffter’s wife to maintain the phone number used by the deceased as the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The Criminal Investigation Department stated that social media data reports and phone records related to the death were recorded on this phone and the phone has been handed over to the Government Analyst for analysis reports. The CID said that further investigation will be done on whether the data may have been destroyed and a report will be filed in the court in the future.

The court had called for this report through the computer department of the Criminal Investigation Department regarding whether the evidence related to the incident could be destroyed by allowing the deceased’s wife to use the phone number.

President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne had made a request to the court on 6th June to allow the wife to keep the phone number of the deceased.

The second post-mortem examination of the deceased is being conducted at the Galle Karapitiya Hospital, and it was revealed in the court that the body parts have been forwarded to the Government Analyst.
