(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Aguruwathota police have managed to arrest the main suspect in connection with the murder of a young mother and her infant daughter in Aguruwathota in Horana this morning.
The Police Media Division said the suspect, who is a close relative of the murdered woman’s husband, was arrested while hiding inside a house in Warakagoda.
A team led by Anguruwathota Police Officer-In-Charge Chief Inspector Ananda Silva went there to raid the place suddenly this morning based on information received by the police that the suspect was coming to his house in Salgas Mawatha area of Warakagoda.
However the suspect was not found in the house and during a thorough search of the forest behind the house, the suspect was found to be hiding behind some banana trees.
Police acting immediately, have chased after the suspect and arrested him after a resisting arrest, the police said.
At that time, the suspect has tried to attack the OIC several times with a pointed weapon such as a rather large scissor blade, and the officer has averted the attack. After unsuccessful attempt to attack the officer, the suspect has stabbed himself several times in the chest, the police said.
M. Vasana Kumari (24), a resident of Anguruwathota Uruthudawa area, and her 11-month-old daughter Tashmi Dilanya went missing on July 18 and their bodies were found yesterday (21) left in a forest area in Rathmaldeniya, Anguruwathota.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Horana Magistrate.
Aguruwathota police are conducting further investigations.
