Election Commission instructed to model Sri Lanka’s election system after Europe

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –Mr. Saman Ekanayake, the President’s Secretary, has instructed the Election Commission to prepare methods to reduce the time from the acceptance of the nominations to the polling day.

It is mentioned in the instructions given by the President’s Secretary to the Election Commission including the Chairman of the Election Commission Mr. RML Ratnayake to prepare this system by taking examples from countries with advanced electoral systems including Europe.

Since Sri Lanka is a country that takes the longest time to conduct elections, attention has been drawn to the amount of money that is wasted unnecessarily due to the prolongation of the election period.

The President’s Secretary has said that once an election is announced, the entire government machinery spends time, effort and money on it, so it is an obstacle to maintaining the normal life of the country.
