(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The opening ceremony of the “Let’s Save Beira” project to clean and develop the Beira Lake and Canals, which is the heart of Colombo city, was held on last Thursday 07th at the Beira Reservoir. It was under the patronage of Dr. Kirinde Assaji, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and with the participation of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, and Environment Minister Naseer Ahmed. In addition, around 150 dignitaries from home and abroad participated in the inauguration ceremony.
Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Urban Development Authority, Central Environment Authority, Sri Lanka Climate Fund (Private) Company and the Colombo Municipal Council will carry out the monitoring activities here and the representatives nominated by those institutions will carry out the project for the project. The company is tasked with providing necessary advice and facilitation. GROEPO Pte.Ltd as the project proponent of this project. The company’s local subsidiary GROEPO Lanka Bioscience (Pvt) Ltd is working.
40 machines are to be installed under this pilot project, which will be effective for 20 years, for which the initial capital investment and technical know-how will be provided by Japan’s GROEPO Pte.Ltd. It is provided by the private company and it is 03 million US dollars.
This project is expected to clean the water of Beira Lake, which has been gradually getting polluted for half a century due to adverse human activities, to eliminate its pollution and to continue maintaining that condition and to use it for development activities along with the maintenance of water quality. In parallel with this project, alternative methods are also being introduced to identify ways to dispose of sewage and waste into Lake Beira.
This project, which takes place without any financial investment from the Sri Lankan government, is presented to the country by the Japanese government as a gesture of gratitude and support to recover from the current financial crisis.
It was in appreciation of former President J.R. Jayawardene’s speech against the punishment of the Japanese at the International Conference held in San Francisco in 1951 and the current President Ranil Wickramasinghe’s efforts to rebuild the country from the current financial crisis.
