(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Deshabandu Tennakoon, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province, says that on average about 5,000 criminal incidents involving children are reported in Sri Lanka every year.
In 2021, there were 5,306 crimes against children in Sri Lanka, 5,404 in 2022 and 3,876 in the period up to June 2023.
Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon disclosed this information while participating in a Children’s Day celebration program held recently (01) at Vihara Mahadevi Park premises in Colombo in conjunction with World Children’s Day.
SDIG Tennakoon further said that the main crimes against children reported to the police stations are child cruelty, child abuse, assaulting, inflicting injury, physical abuse and corporal punishment.
The special children’s day ceremony was organized by AN ENTERTAINMENT.
