Body of a Sri Lankan woman found in the rubble of a collapsed building in Lebanon

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – dead body of a Sri Lankan woman has been recovered from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Lebanon.

Rescue workers have recovered the body of the 65-year-old Sri Lankan woman from the rubble of the seven-storey apartment building partially collapsed in the Lebanese town of Mansourieh, southeast of Beirut on October 16.

The Sri Lankan woman was among five others who had been trapped after the collapse of the seven-storey building.

The Sri Lankan Ambassador to Lebanon Mr. Kapila Jayaweera said the deceased was a 65-year-old woman named I. Premalatha, a resident of Matara Mirissa area.

Ms. Premalatha’s body was found among the debris yesterday (21) at around 3.30 am Sri Lanka time and her body has been deposited in Bagda Hospital, the Ambassador said.

The ambassador said that the relatives were contacted online to identify the body and that the final decision on how to carry out the last rites will be taken by the relatives of Ms. Premalatha.

The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau said the relatives of the woman have been informed about the incident and they have not yet announced whether the body of the deceased woman will be brought to Sri Lanka or not.
