(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Southern Province Education Secretary states that several schools have been closed due to the heavy rain that has been falling in the Southern Province since last night (22).
Accordingly, it has been decided to close only the affected schools in Akuressa, Deniyaya, Mulatiyana and Walasmulla areas.
Director of Education of the Southern Province said the Zonal Education Directors have been empowered to decide on closing the schools due to adverse weather.
Zonal Education Director of Deniyaya Region, Ms. Dhammika Priyadarshani, said that due to the emergency situation, 77 schools in Deniyaya Education Zone were closed today (23) following the approval of the Southern Provincial Education Secretary.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the Matara-Kotapala road has been blocked from Kirilipana due to the collapse of an earthen mound on to the road, hampering through traffic.
Morawaka-Neluwa Road is also blocked from Morawaka town and Pitabaddara area is flooded due to the Kirama Oya overflowing.
Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has issued an ‘Amber’ color flood warning in some of the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley in Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions.
