(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Throughout history, individuals born in unique circumstances have inspired both challenges and remarkable acts of humanity. Among such cases are conjoined twins, whose lives are often marked by extraordinary difficulties, even in the performance of basic daily tasks. This reality is seen as part of Allah’s divine order. While global efforts exist to improve their lives, Saudi Arabia stands out as a beacon of compassion, showcasing unparalleled dedication to their welfare.
For decades, Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of surgical interventions to separate conjoined twins, welcoming families from around the world. These patients are flown to Saudi Arabia on special arrangements, where they undergo life-changing surgeries performed by world-renowned medical experts in state-of-the-art facilities. This extraordinary program is led by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Rabiah, a distinguished medical professional and humanitarian. Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia has become a global pioneer in conjoined twin separation surgeries, a testament to the nation’s commitment to humanity.
Saudi Arabia’s unparalleled contributions in this field are marked by a legacy of over 30 years of continuous service. The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, established to consolidate the country’s philanthropic efforts, has been instrumental in driving this initiative. Even before Dr. Al Rabeeah’s appointment as the center’s executive director, Saudi Arabia had laid the groundwork for this transformative mission. The center continues to uphold this legacy, serving as a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian leadership.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of this groundbreaking initiative, Saudi Arabia is hosting an International Conference on Conjoined Twins on 24–25 November 2024 in Riyadh. This landmark event, held under the auspices of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, will bring together leading medical professionals and scholars from across the globe. The conference aims to share insights, advancements, and experiences, reaffirming Saudi Arabia’s position as a global leader in humanitarian medical care.
Saudi Arabia’s achievements in this field extend beyond medical intervention. The government assumes full responsibility for all expenses related to the transportation, accommodation, and medical care of conjoined twins and their families. In a remarkable demonstration of compassion, some separated twins and their families were invited to perform Hajj in 2024 under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ free Hajj program. These families, overwhelmed with gratitude, prayed fervently for the Saudi leadership, expressing their heartfelt thanks for the transformative impact on their lives.
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center continues to expand its global footprint, delivering vital services across the world. For example, in Sri Lanka, the center recently provided medical care to over 4,500 patients, distributed 600 prescription glasses, and conducted more than 500 eye surgeries, benefitting people of all backgrounds and religions. Such initiatives underscore Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes, driven by the values of Islam and a profound sense of responsibility toward humanity.
Beyond its medical programs, Saudi Arabia has been a first responder in crises ranging from natural disasters to economic emergencies, extending support to nations in need without discrimination. The creation of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in 2015 further streamlined these efforts, consolidating them under the motto “Humanity Without Borders.” Since its inception, the center has facilitated billions of dollars in aid, touching the lives of countless individuals worldwide.
The World Conjoined Twins Day conference in Riyadh is a historic moment, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s leadership in both medical excellence and humanitarian service. As the nation continues to innovate and expand its contributions, it sets a powerful example of compassion, generosity, and international solidarity. On behalf of all nations benefiting from these unparalleled efforts, particularly Sri Lanka, profound gratitude is extended to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the people of Saudi Arabia.
May Allah bless Saudi Arabia for its outstanding contributions to humanity.
