India supports livelihood development of 70,000 in Hambantota District

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –In a special ceremony held today at Nonagama Cultural Centre in Ambalantota in Hambantota District, Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, and H.E. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, High Commissioner of India, jointly launched a project to provide livelihood support to nearly 70,000 people from the farming and fishing communities in Hambantota District.

2500 students participate in Tsunami Drills conducted in Galle

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami claimed the lives of more than thirty-five thousand Sri Lankans and affected more than one million people across the island. It damaged a total of 183 schools, 18 vocational and industrial training institutes and 4 universities, affecting the studies of nearly 100,000 students across fourteen Coastal Districts.

Kandy unrest: TID arrests two more suspects

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) probing into the recent incidents that had taken place in several parts of the Kandy district, yesterday arrested two more suspects in connection with the arson attack on several religious places of worship and business places in Ambatenna in the Pujapitiya Police Division.
