Police Inspector arrested over killing of inmates at Welikada Prison

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Criminal Investigations Department of Sri Lanka police has arrested Neomal Rangajeeva, a police inspector attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau in connection with the deadly shooting which killed 27 inmates at the Welikada Prison in 2012.

The police media spokesman’s office said that the Criminal Investigations Department has commenced an investigation into the Welikada Prison incident.

The police inspector was arrested in relations to the investigations, the spokesman’s office said.

The deadly riot at the country’s largest and most crowded prison on November 9th, 2012 was of an enormous magnitude resulting in deaths of 27 inmates, and injuries to a prison officer and 20 prisoners.

The riot occurred when prisoners took control of the prison after objecting to a search by the Special Task Force who entered the prison to nab hidden arms, drugs and mobile phones in the prison premises.

The arrested police officer will be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today (29).
