Sri Lanka PM hopeful of strong economy after three difficult years

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says after three difficult years the government is initiating an accelerated development and methodically taking forward the economy.

He said that there was a mountain of debt when the government came into power, but, the government has been able to stabilize the economy and the people, who had to undergo many hardships during these three years will benefit from a strong economy.

“To go forward, we need to create jobs, increase the income, accelerate development in large scale, because in future economy cannot be taken forward if the revenues and foreign exchange are not sufficient to relieve the country from the debt burden,” the Premier said.

The Prime Minister said that the government had to take some difficult decisions and the people underwent hardships but now people have been able to receive benefits of the present strong economy.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was speaking at a function held at the Temple Trees today to hand over appointment letters to 4,100 graduates who have been recruited as development officers under the program to grant employment to unemployed graduates.

The new officers will be trained by the Ministry of National Policy and Economic Affairs.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and Minister of Youth Affairs Sagala Ratnayake handed over the appointment letters to the new recruits.

The new development officers will contribute to implement Government’s development programs such as Gamperaliya and EEnterprise Sri Lanka and carry forward government policy aimed at creating a rich country by the year 2025.

Speaking further the Premier said everyone has the right for a better future and in these three years the government prepared the framework.

“We received a vehicle with a broken engine and no tires. We took three years to repair this vehicle. The repairs are done now. We also painted it green on one side and blue on the other. Now it is ready to go. We need to enjoy the benefits of that now. When a government has to make difficult decisions, the people suffer. They bear the burden,” he said.

He told the new recruits that they are also stakeholders of the journey forward and they also have to perform their duties and requested them to work with commitment.
