‘Jana Balaya to Colombo’ Joint Opposition protest ends, normal traffic resumes

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The ‘Jana Balaya to Colombo’ protest rally organized by the joint opposition has been concluded.

The joint opposition leaders who stayed at the Lake House roundabout until midnight yesterday (05) had held a meeting at the site, state Sinhala daily Dinamina reported.

Parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa and Mahindananda Aluthgamage have arrived at the place where the Joint Opposition supporters held a ‘Sathyagraha’ in parallel to the protest and informed that the protest was concluded.

Following the briefing, the protesters have dispersed at around 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

By now, the police have allowed normal traffic unrestrictedly.

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old resident of Hatton, who was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital after suffering a heart attack during the protest has died.

Speaking to media, Police Media Spokesman, Ruwan Gunasekara said that no alarming incidents have been reported in the city of Colombo yesterday.

He said that there was no reported scuffle in the march, but the traffic in the Lake House and surrounding areas had been obstructed.

Local media reported that 16 protesters were hospitalized after consuming milk packets distributed to them during the protest.
