(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The United Nations Secretary General Antònio Guterres lauding the “resilience” of Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions, has welcomed the resolution of the political crisis in the island nation in a peaceful and constitutional manner.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the resolution of the political crisis in Sri Lanka through peaceful, constitutional means, and applauds the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions,” Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for Secretary-General, said Thursday
“The Secretary-General calls on all political actors to seize the opportunity of the appointment of the new cabinet to resolve outstanding political differences in the same spirit of respect for democracy and in the interest of the people of Sri Lanka,” according to his spokesperson.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena plunged the country into a political crisis when he ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and replaced him with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
President Sirisena reinstated Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister following a Supreme Court ruling against his decision to dissolve parliament and hold early elections and appointed a 30-member cabinet on Thursday.
