(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Ending days of speculation, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced today that National Selectors have appointed Dimuth Karunaratne as the ODI Captain of the Sri Lankan team.
The left-handed batsman will lead the team during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be held in England from May 30 to July 14.
Karunaratne’s appointment was ratified by the Minister of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports Honorable Harin Fernando, the SLC said in a statement.
Although Karunaratne has not played an ODI since the 2015 World Cup, his leadership during the historic Test series win in South Africa had favored him to earn the spot as captain of the ODI team.
Asantha de Mel, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee yesterday said the Sri Lanka Cricket team for the ICC Cricket World Cup will be announced on Thursday, April 18.
The ICC deadline is April 23 for member countries to officially announce the respective squads that would compete in championship.
