(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Eastern Province Governor M L A M Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Salley have resigned from their positions a short while ago, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
“President Maithripala Sirisena accepted the resignation letters of Governors Azath Salley and M. L. A. M. Hizbullah just a while ago,” the PMD said.
The governors, appointed by the President, have decided to resign in the wake of protests staged in many areas today in support of Parliamentarian Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera’s demands to remove the two governors and Minister Rishad Bathiudeen.
Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera commenced a hunger strike last week demanding that these politicians be removed from their positions over their alleged links to the Easter Sunday bombings.
