Prevailing showery condition to continue

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Southern Province Governor Hemal Gunasekera has announced that all schools in the Galle and Matara districts of the Southern Province will be closed Tuesday (24) and Wednesday (25).

The decision to close schools was taken following the heavy rains experienced in the two districts.

The Irrigation Department announced that the water levels of the Kalu, Nilwala and Gin rivers are rising.

The Kalu River is overflowing in the Millakanda area. The water level of the Ganga is rising in the Thawalama and Baddegama areas and there is a slight flooding in the Thawalama area. Nilwala River is flooding in the Panadugama area this afternoon.

Several roads in Galle have been inundated due to the overflowing of the Gin River, officials said.

Several low lying areas and several roads were flooded due to the overflowing of Kiramba Ara Oya. There is flooding in Akuressa, Siyambala Oya and Kamburupitiya area due to the overflowing of Nilwala River. Lenabattuwa tank in Kamburupitiya is spilling over after six years inundating several areas.

Dangedara, Kahaduuwawatta, Yakkalamulla, Himaduwa and several other areas on the Galle-Baddegama road have been inundated due to the inclement weather.

Meanwhile, the estuary of the Nilwala River has been expanded with backhoes to accelerate flowing of water to sea.
