(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in a statement yesterday that the Presidential election this year could be conducted in a peaceful and fair manner and voters could go to the polling centre without fear or suspicion and exercise their votes according to their wishes because the Government had created the environment necessary for the Elections Commissioner and his staff to act in a free and fair manner without pressurising them in any manner.
In a media statement, the Prime Minister said that the Government’s fervent hope was to see that this ‘praiseworthy system’ they created by establishing independent commissions was further protected.
Wickremesinghe said that on behalf of the UNP-led New Democratic Front and, on his personal behalf, he wished to thank all voters who exercised their votes in favour of Sajith Premadasa at the November 16 Presidential election in such an environment.
The Prime Minister said he wished to make use of this opportunity to thank all public servants led by the Elections Commissioner and his staff, police, tri forces and all other parties who worked in a dedicated manner from the day of the announcement of the Presidential elections to its conclusion and all the people who assisted in protecting and maintaining peace.
