(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Minister of Tourism and Aviation Services Prasanna Ranatunga says that registration of tourist hotels throughout the country has been made compulsory in order to improve the quality of tourist hotels.
The Minister points out that while at present there are about 20,000 tourist hotels island wide which are not registered with the government, only around 2000 hotels are registered.
Accordingly, the Minister of Tourism has instructed the Tourism Development Authority to take immediate steps to register the hotels, which are not yet registered, within the next three months.
The Minister has instructed the Tourism Development Authority to seriously consider the standards of the hotels when registering the establishments which are not yet registered.
The Minister has also instructed to enlighten the owners on maintaining the hotels according to international standards.
The Tourism Development Authority has already commenced registration of hotels and a special team of officers has been deployed for this purpose.
