Accepting nominations of candidates for the General Elections from today

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Accepting nominations of candidates for the 2020 Parliamentary Election will commence today, March 12th and conclude at 12 noon on the 19th March. Nominations will be accepted at respective District Secretariats.

Deposits from Independent Groups to contest the election will be accepted till noon, on the 18th of March while recognized political parties are not required to place deposits to contest Parliamentary Elections.

According to the National Election Commission 16,263,885 registered voters can exercise their franchise at the 2020 parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on 25th April.

At this election, 196 members are to be elected at district level under the proportional representation system to the 225-member parliament, while 29 members will be elected from the National List. Under the 1978 Constitution, the members are elected to the ninth Parliament.

Compared to 2015 elections, Galle and Matara districts will lose one electorate each, while Badulla and Moneragala districts will be given one seat each.

The Election Commission says that 46 recognized political parties will contest the general election.

Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya says that the general election will not be postponed due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
