(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees Thursday(01) symbolically presented 2000 three wheelers to the Sri Lanka Police needed for ensuring national security through intelligence and civil duties and prevention of crime and drugs while strengthening the concept of community policing.
These three wheelers will be distributed to police stations islandwide in recognition of the need for a strong transportation system for every police station in line with the Vision of Prosperity Policy Statement of the President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa symbolically handed over three wheelers to Meegoda, Gothatuwa, Yakkala, Bemmulla, Pallewela, Mihijaya Sevana, Cinnamon Gardens, Egoda Uyana and Mattegoda Police Stations.
The three-wheelers are expected to be used for crime prevention and investigation at relevant police stations, investigation of various complaints, deployment for 119 emergency calls as required, for use in the duties of the Children and Women’s Bureau and the Anti-Corruption Unit, and for intelligence and civil duties in the intelligence divisions.
The program also promotes the concept of community policing by strengthening liaison between the police and the public due to quick access to rural areas.
The government has spent over Rs. 829 million on these duty free three wheelers.
Ministers Rear Admiral (Retd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekara, Johnston Fernando, CB Ratnayake, and Ramesh Pathirana, State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera and Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Major General (Retd.) Jagath Alwis, Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne and many other senior police officers were present.
